“DING DONG!”

I can still hear Val Garland voices, terse compliment with exciting emotion run through the whole series, I can tell her and other judges feeling because each episode of this competition are always have some masterpieces.

Series introduction

Glow up is a reality television competition which full of talented, creative and energetic MUAs(make-up artists), first and second seasons hosted by Stacy Dooley, last season hosted by Maya Indea Jama. Judged by industry professionals Val Garland and Dominic Skinner, also have special guests each episode, they are the best in the industry, like Rankin, globally-renowned photographer and director, Michelle Visage, television host, actress and media personality, Nikkie Tutorials, makeup artist and beauty blogger. The competition systems is, one person gets eliminated every week, at the end there is only a winner can have the contract to work with the top make-up artists as an assistant.

Why I love Glow Up so much?

Passion, diversified artworks and prize ingenuity dominate the entire series, after finishing series, I started to believe that everyone can create something meaningful and we all deserve to pursuing our dream, as well as inspired by some artists’s personality or attitude.

Following are five MUAs impressed me the most:

Season 1

💙Leigh have color blind, instead of questioning himself like some people does, he chose to follow his heart and create bunch of beyond standard artworks. Like a silent protest, Leigh do make-up to prove that he can be a make-up artist if he work hard. When the competition’s topic is close to him, he seized the opportunity and well played, I was very moved by his reaction.(episode 4)

Season 2

💚James’s profound bold and variety style captivated me that I wish he can get that winner contract! I can tell his personality through his artworks, some of them have added elements as a drag queen, harmonious and interesting. The concepts and details of James are very complete and darn persuasive, and every piece of work is like this.

💛Eve is a flexible and warmth person, and always remains positive and confident in such an unbearable high-pressure environment. She is not afraid of trying new things to combine ideas, colors and different substances, remarkably the time Eve work with Rankin, water shooting is a tough project, yet she nailed it and amazed every judges even Rankin want to invite her to the studio for finish shooting.

Season 3

💜Craig is from Northern Ireland, a quite conservative place that only women wear make-up, however Craig believe that man can do make-up and fell confidence as women does, and he sharing his belief with action, I can see the spirit through his works and his great attitude, I truly appreciate that people stand out for their beliefs and work hard to proof its value. Craig is good at combined knowledge and skill, most of his works are original and resonated with me especially episode 7-guilty pleasure, visualize music into sound waves, clever move.

💗Calm, steady and focus are the way she express her passion about make-up, my personal favorite, Sophie. When the competition is in full swing, she is always the one who focuses most, like living in her own world without being disturbed by others, I admire this characteristic of her because I can easily distracted by notification of my phone, in order to be a capable person I must focus on what I’m working on and leave those unnecessary things behind. Moreover, Sophie is really good at special effects make-up especially using prostheses to bring those deformed or strange looks characters alive, and because of this, she created bunch of realistic artworks, they are totally amazing.

The coolest episode

Create distinctive make-up from different classic eras, season 1 episode 7. MUAs presented classic remarkably, clearly expressed each decade’s popular and feature make-up looks from 1970, 1980 to 1990, the effects and colors made the models seemed like people from that era, lets me know what element are popular in those decades, using make-up to narrative time background and story perfectly, as if I am in that scene.

In conclusion

People makes mistakes, the same goes for those masters. You can swallowed by emotions easily when negative thoughts or pressure comes toward you, it’s a fight-or-flight response, either learn and grow from your mistakes or give up, most of the MUAs fight for themselves, and a few realized that they were not ready or suitable for the competition, in my opinion, their spirit are all commendable.

Make-up can present different things or emotions, it can be a look, perspective you want to convey or even a story you want to tell, it’s depend on your technique, passion and a sincere heart.

There are so many surprises MUAs and artworks in this competition, I recommend to you if you are out of inspiration or motivation to get things done, this is perfect for you to put yourself together and start again, also you will be amazed and have the same feeling as judges

“A-MAZING!”

“MARVELOUS!”
